Was transporting a supposed nuclear weapon in a convoy across the country to a secure holding facility in the desert. It was actually a downed alien vehicle being transported to an AEGIS facility. The convoy was ambushed and many people died. David Lacoste was wounded in the face by shrapnel but continued to fight on, and eventually succeeded and turning the ambush away. A member of AEGIS was also in the convoy and was so impressed with how he handled himself through all of this that he brought him into AEGIS.
